Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres or the "Isle of Women," was so named by the Spanish because of a multitude of goddess images found when they landed in the 1500s. The goddess was Ix Chel, and a shrine to her honor still exists somewhere on the island.

When our little party landed, we bought a tour by motor boat for $250 pesos. I had hoped to avoid buying tours, but I decided it would be easier, especially since it included lunch.

On our first stop, we got to swim on the north shore of the island. The water was almost completely calm, blue, and clear against the white sand. Beautiful!
