Mystery

One of the curiosities at Spokane Community College is the collection of strange and unexpected plants growing in the various corners of the campus. I sometimes imagine that the horticulture department decided to introduce unusual species over the years and thus create a unique diversity of vegetation.

This tree was something I had never seen before. It had clusters of orange colored fruit, each one in the shape of a bean that was seemingly cut in half. The orange 'beans' grew inside red pods with a flower-like shell.

What is the identity of this plant, and what is the origin of this tree? For now, the answer is kind of a mystery.
