Little Falls

Little Falls Dam sits at the boundary between the Spokane Indian Reservation and Lincoln County. Historically, the site served as a major salmon fishery for indigenous people until Washington Water Power constructed the dam in the early part of the twentieth century. The salmon runs were completely destroyed.

This year, high levels of melting snow has created a rush of water over the spillway. I haven't seen this much water over the dam since I was a child.

Roots

On Sunday, my family dug white camas in the traditional fields near Wilbur. Of course, I had to take another photograph of myself with my petze (digging stick) and bag, in my "classic pose." Yes, I recognize my own vanity, but then I think this photograph will become a historical document someday. It will show how my generation continued the traditions of the past.

Grand Coulee

On Saturday, I drove to Wilbur, Washington in preparation for my family's annual outing to dig roots. Several of us rented rooms in a little motel on the main street in town.

That night, I was unable to fall asleep, so I got in my car and made the short drive to Grand Coulee Dam. It was a strange, almost haunting night. The air was humid and surprisingly warm. Distant flashes of lightning illuminated the blackened sky. Otherwise, the darkness was so complete that nothing was visible at all, except for a narrow row of reflectors marking the edge of the highway and fading into the endless horizon.

When I arrived in Grand Coulee, I was surprised by the smell of the air. Though I could not see them, the surrounding fields filled the air with the aroma of sage bathed in a recent rain.

Gran Coulee

Service Berries

Last year I didn't find as many service berries as I had hoped for my traditional dinners, but when I hiked into the hills near my house yesterday and today, I saw white service berry flowers everywhere, like an answer to my prayer. It is beautiful.

Bayas "Service"

On March 29, Community Minded Enterprises sponsored an official welcome ceremony for the Ecuador youth. The event provided an opportunity to share a common vision for the global community and to experience a variety of cultural expressions.

Dan Baumgarten, executive director of Community Minded Enterprises, opened the ceremony. He described many of the green features of the community building, but more importantly, he emphasized the role of Community Minded in building sustainable communities based on deeply democratic principles. "As more people gain access to genuine community dialog," he said, "deep democracy takes root. Creating sustainable futures for communities is good for democracy."

The Ecuador youth responded warmly. Several stood spontaneously during the meeting and offered words of support for the goals and values outlined by the director. Alexis, one of the youth from Ecuador, spoke to the group in English.

The meeting took a very celebratory tone when some of the youth and adult leaders began to play traditional Ecuadorian music. Alex and María Fernanda performed a traditional dance, followed by a dance for everyone present. Above all, the meeting was an opportunity to share our new friendship and to express a common hope for building a new community between our two cultures.

Coyote Spring

When Marcos visited my home from Ecuador, we traveled several times to the Spokane Indian Reservation. Each time, he asked me stop at a small natural spring a few miles past Seven Mile Bridge. I had told him when I was younger my family used to stop there for water, and I imagine our elders had done so before us. In fact, I seem to remember my yaya Messie told me about it when she was still alive. Well, Marcos was so impressed he insisted on stopping every time. He said that spring seemed like a spiritual doorway to our reservation.

Normally, I do not travel that way, and so I have not had the chance to stop at the spring since he left; however, I still pass Coyote Spring on my way up the hill. When I was a child, we used to stop there too. Some people affectionately call it Coyote Slobbers. Out of respect for what Marcos told me, I stopped there yesterday to give thanks.

Many years ago, someone put a pipe and a small pool to collect the water. Now the pool is overgrown with bright green vegetation, forming a sharp contrast with the dry yellow hillside all around. The highway passes only a few meters away, but in that moment all was quiet. All I could hear was the soft trickle of water and blowing of wind through the pine trees. These places make me feel a little lonely, and yet they also give an odd sense of comfort and connection to the past.

Fuente Coyote

Balance

My hand within the sun's ring...
Mi mano dentro del anillo del sol...

Yesterday afternoon, I went for a run behind Whitworth University (near my home), hoping to collect my thoughts after several stressful weeks at work. As I ran, I looked down at the ground, feeling somewhat off-center and discouraged. Honestly, my life is beginning to feel out of balance.

Quite unexpectedly, a red-tailed hawk flew directly over my head and caused me to look up. In that moment, I saw a rainbow forming a perfect circle around the sun, like a ring. For one brief second, the hawk formed a dark silhouette against the sun, and then quickly disappeared. It seemed like a message from the universe to remember my center and cling to my truth. I stopped to give thanks, and luckily, I had my camera.

Now perhaps all of us will find a little more balance in life.

Equilibrio

Recovery

Some of my readers may recall my co-worker suffered a heart attack several weeks ago. They will be happy to know he made a full recovery and stopped by for a surprise visit last night. He looked happy and wonderful! When we saw him, some of my co-workers and I actually cried for joy. We participated in a miracle and thank God for the experience.

Morning Dreams

Marcos by the Little Spokane River.
Marcos cerca del Río Spokane Pequeño.

The first night after the Ecuador students arrived, I had two dreams.

In my first dream, I saw the students sitting in a circle. They looked happy to me, but I was very tired. A voice told me, "You may feel tired, but the children are coming here even more tired than they know. You must pray for them during their stay and give them all your strength. You must care for them as your own children."

Then I had a second dream. In my dream, Marcos was very angry because people in the world had judged the children. He held up a photograph of each one and told me what people had said about them. I comforted Marcos and said the world will judge, but we know their spirits. I then reminded him what the spirits had told me; that I would pray for them and give them all my strength.

The next morning, Marcos and I got up early and ran to the waterfalls near my house. Snow still covered the ground. I told him my dreams and then shared many spiritual things from my culture. As we conversed, I learned that Marcos shares many of my cultural and spiritual perspectives, even though we come from two different countries.

The Arrival

Going back in time, I wish to recount as many events as possible from the Ecuador Youth Leadership Exchange. When I worked in the midst of the project, I hardly had any time to make a journal, but now I have an opportunity to reflect on the events of the past several weeks.

The students arrived a day late because of canceled flights in Dallas and missed connections in Seattle. This caused a great degree of confusion and anxiety for those of us waiting in Spokane. Then the weather took a turn for the worse and delayed the flight even more. By the time the students finally arrived, our group had already spent more than five hours in the airport worrying. But as I said before, when I finally saw their faces, all my worries went away. I felt my heart open to these young people from the moment I first saw them.

They arrived near the end of March, and yet they arrived to see quite a magnificent snowstorm. Many of us in Spokane cursed the snow, but none of the students had ever seen such a thing up close. They were enchanted by the beauty of the snowy sky.

After each family connected to their respective students, my family connected with one of the adult leaders, Marcos Lema. He would stay in our home for the duration of the exchange. On the evening of the arrival, we went home briefly, took photographs in the snow, and then went out for a family dinner.

Indigenous Spirituality

Most of the Ecuador youth either represent an indigenous society by their own ancestry, or live within the area of influence of an indigenous people. As such, they seem to possess a deep spiritual readiness to embrace important connections to indigenous cultures in the United States. As they have discovered the ancestral traditions of the Spokane Tribe, the Ecuador youth have expressed both amazement and admiration. In fact, some of the youth were surprised to know such a thing even existed within the United States. They imagined this country as a land of eternal shopping centers, freeways, and factories.

As a member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians, I recognize the importance of making cultural and spiritual connections with indigenous people around the world. My role in this project has been unique because I offer these youth a perspective few others in this community can provide. I have been able to open their worldview to include local customs, while addressing them in Spanish. More than once, a member of the group has taken me aside to thank me for my participation in the program. One young man even approached me in tears and said he never imagined someone like me existed in this country.

They whole process has humbled me deeply.

For their part, these youth have opened my eyes as well. I see a group of young people deeply committed to the environment and their role as youth leaders. They inspire me more than words can describe. As time allows, I will write more of my experience and include photographs of the exchange.

Ecuador Youth

To all my faithful readers, I apologize profusely for not publishing more often. As many of you know, I've been busily engaged with facilitating the Ecuador Youth Leadership Exchange, in cooperation with Community Minded Enterprises of Spokane, and Instituto Allpa de Ecuador. Nine youth and three adult leaders came to the United States, and are now being hosted by local families. I spend my days working with the youth and then I still go off to my regular job at night. Overall, the program has given me an amazing experience, but I'm very tired, and I have had very little time to update my blog. Perhaps when this is over, I will publish all my photographs and stories in retrospect. Until then, I hope to see you all soon.
