On Tuesday Spokane Tribal elders and youth traveled to Spangle, Washington to dig brown camas, wild onions, and wild carrots. I tagged along for the experience of continuing our tradition within the spirit of community. As I heard the conversation and laughter of the people, I imagined the spirits of the land smiling to see us again.
My auntie Sharon.
The land is owned by a non-Native family that respects the value of our traditions. They have preserved these lands against development and have nurtured a positive relationship with the Spokane people. Their compassion and understanding inspire me.
