Red Bird

Does anyone know this little bird?

I was walking toward the Gonzaga campus yesterday afternoon, when this little red-headed bird fluttered over to a puddle in the street. I've never seen a bird like this in Spokane, so I stopped and slowly readied my camera. Such a beautiful little animal, but after only one shot, and the bird flew away.

Great shot. I love the color and texture in the pavement. Looks like a house finch to me. I know they're all over the Palouse.

Hi Bill, thanks for checking in. I'm glad you find meaning in what I post.

I visited your blog and found that I really enjoy the look and feel. Now I'm reading some of the posts. Very interesting.

Thank you!

I think it is a house finch

It looks like a male house finch from the angle of the photo. Could be a male purple finch - but most likely a house.

Thanks Colleen and Tim. I did a little research on house finches, and this bird seems the best candidate.

Hi JJ... your comment sneaked in without my notice. How strange, especially since I have to approve all comments.

Anyway, I'm glad that you liked the picture. I wanted to say something about the color and texture, just like you said, but I just couldn't muster enough of my poetic qualities that day. Thanks for noticing though.

It is an extraordinary picture. Hang on to that one. Something very special about it - house finch or not.

"Finch is a wise totem who personifies adaptation and change. He revels in his ability to shift the shape of his beak, which changes according to the place that he is in. Mokolé say that they can learn much from watching his beak change its shape and size. Finch is also known to the Corax, who try to learn the secrets of life from him."
